Two Mathematicians in Moncton

Have you heard this one before?

Courtesy of Shelagh Rogers, this morning.

They’ve invented a new musical instrument, the “tritar” (the name may not stick yet – they’re seeking a trademark, however didn’t Mark Sandman of morphine also invent a three-necked stringed instrument that he’s calling a ‘tritar’?), while attempting to solve a rather arcane mathematical problem which was too drole for public radio.

The stringed instrument has 3 necks stretching out in opposite directions, one of which is fretted, and involves a complex network of strings which are only attached to the instrument at one end. Hard to picture, isn’t it?

It sounded.. indescribable (of course), but spine-shivery.

And Keith Richards is rumoured to be giving it a test drive next month.
